Outside in Food Court (ad)

Last weekend I went along with the Southampton Bloggers gang to have lunch at Outside in Food Court in Southsea. I’ve actually been there before but i only had the chance to try one vendor (who’s now sadly left) so it was the perfect time to head back and see what other options there.

There aren’t any solely vegan eateries at Outside in but I definitely didn’t miss out! Not one bit. With the exception of 2 places, every place has at least one vegan option on their menu and that also means there are plenty of vegetarian options hanging around as well! Their website describes them as the home of street food in Portsmouth and thats absolutely what they are. As far as I’m aware there’s nowhere else like it on the South Coast, so Outside in have definitely found a gap in the market!

If you’re not familiar with how it works, it’s the same concept to the European food courts (like the one I visited in Amsterdam) which i am a huge fan of; long benches in a big open space (this one happens to be a warehouse) where you can either have a big feast from one place, or try lots of little bits from different vendors -that means you can mix and match your cuisines as much as you like!

It’s such a good use of a space that would probably otherwise mostly go to waste! I think it would be the perfect place to go to for lunch or dinner with friends – doesn’t matter if you’ve got fussy eaters or people who all want different things, theres something for everyone at Outside in!

They also score extra points for being dog friendly (there was a sausage dog in there when we went, eee!) and all their cutlery, plates and napkins are super eco friendly.

One other big selling point is that you can book tables – which is a great option to have, especially if you’re going with a big group, or going on a busy weekend (and boy, does it get busy). They’re also cash free and all the Outside in vendors take contactless payments instead for a faff free dinner experience!

The current eateries (correct as of March 2020) are:

Arepa 2 Go

Breeno’s Kitchen

Dumpling Dumpling

Natty’s Jerk

One Tonne Burger Co

The Panormus Pizzeria

You can see all of the different menus over at the Outside in website, which has all the details about each vendor, their opening times and details about their events.

Outside in, Southsea - BecauseNicole.comWe were so so lucky to be given loads of different types of food to try and I loved that going to the event meant that we got the chance to speak to the people running them to find out what they’re all about.

My stand out favourites from the day were the sharing platter from Dumpling Dumpling, which includes asian fries, a selection of different dumplings, noodles, thai crackers and dipping sauce. They have various really great vegan options and the vegan pesto mac and cheese and no duck dumplings were to die for.

I also absolutely loved the Masala fries and chickpea curry from Breeno’s kitchen, as well as the jerk cauliflower and seasoned fries from Natty’s Jerk – all of them were so full of flavour and really reasonably priced, too.

All the food we tried was so lovely and honestly, the only thing I would change would be to pick it up and move it to Southampton.. or maybe they can just set up another. Please?
